This is a female Belted Kingfisher perched on a steel bar in the LA River. I have yet to get a real closeup photograph of this species since they are incredibly alert birds that fly off at the slightest movement. However, I was able to get somewhat close to this bird since there is a section of the river that is currently being affected by the construction reinforcement of a bridge over the river. Bulldozers ripped out many tall tree and scrubs so that the construction workers were provided with a clear path to the bridge and this allowed me to get close to an area of the river previously inaccessible. The red steel bar is a new piece on the bridge and the kingfisher was utilizing it to watch the river below for fish.
