Capturing the Splendor of Nature and Divine Light
Birds of Winter 2017
Welcome to my visual diary of the beautiful birds I photographed during the winter months. 2017 started off on a great foot with photographing a Turkey Vulture that had a left wing tag, #59, on New Year's Day. It is important to always report a banded and/or tagged bird to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which I did. The USGS informed me that this bird was banded on 6/7/2011, near Humboldt County, CA., by the department of wildlife at Humboldt State University. The bird was estimated to be more than 2 years old when it was banded, but the sex was not determined. This is only the second time in six years of photographing birds that I have captured a tagged bird and it was exciting!

A stunning male Hooded Merganser perched on a downed tree limb in a lake - photographed on New Year's Day. This species is a wintering visitor in my area and is not often seen since this small duck prefers to swim and forage in protected areas.
