An adult male American Redstart photographed in Carson, California on January 4, 2019. This bird is considered a rare bird for the area, because the American Redstart winters east to the Lesser Antilles and south to northern South America.
Like the Painted Redstart that I photographed two days earlier, this species flashes the orange or yellow patches on its wings and outer tail feathers when foraging. These action appear to flush insects that the redstart then pursues and captures.
