This is Evelyn , a 42 year old Western Lowland Gorilla that was born at the LA Zoo.
In October 2000, Evelyn escaped from her enclosure and was behaving like a huge child. For about an hour and 15 minutes, Evelyn poked flowers, swatted at butterflies, played hide and seek with anxious zoo keepers and even went for a stroll to see orangutans, giraffes and elephants. After several failed attempts to coax her back into her habitat area with bananas and apples left on the sidewalks, a zoo attendant darted Evelyn with a tranquilizer. In the end, no one was harmed. Evelyn received a drug to reverse the effects of the anesthesia and has not escaped her enclosure since that fateful day.
Evelyn and I have known each other since the 1980's when I did animal behavioral research on her. I would stand in front of her enclosure and chart her behavior. She is a sweet girl and is well known for throwing kisses to visitors.
