Capturing the Splendor of Nature and Divine Light
Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens
Hubert, a nineteen year old African Lion, takes a closer look at the lizard on the trunk of the Palm tree.
Hubert was born February 7, 1999 at the Lincoln Park Zoo. He came to the Los Angeles Zoo in 2014 from the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. The average life expectancy for African lions in the wild is 14 years, so the wellness of this elderly lion is a testament to the excellent veterinary care he has received in zoological settings.
Post Script: Hubert and his mate, Kalisa, both 21 years old, were euthanized July 30th, 2020, after age-related health problems began diminishing their quality of life. Because these lions were hardly ever apart from one another, the zoo’s management made the difficult decision to put them to sleep at the same time so that one of them would not have to live without the other.
